March 17 Does God Understand Why We Make Choices?Apparently not, because according to Christianity he condemns people to Hell for all eternity for the choices people make. Why do different people make different choices? Different people make different choices for several reasons; one condition for our choices in life is our upbringing. For example, if someone is born into a wealthy family and is raised as if he or she is the center of the world and is spoiled as a child this child may grow up making choices based on their arrogance or greed. If however someone is born into a family in poverty then he or she may resort to making the choice of stealing from others. Now lets say that someone is brought up in a Christian family and is indoctrinated in the Christian belief, this person grows up to be a Christian (Although he or she probably never really had a choice really…) then supposedly he/she gets to go to Heaven when they die. But if someone is born into a nonreligious family, and never has religious beliefs shoved down their throats’ then that person may have a chance to see the world more clearly and after much research becomes an atheist (this to is not necessarily a choice, not many people just decide to become atheists, it‘s more of a conclusion after much research and learning than it is a decision.) Another condition that affects our decisions is events and experiences that occur in our lives. For example, if a child witnesses the death of a parent their personality may develop differently compared to if they had never experienced such a traumatic event. The personality of someone will ultimately determine their choices later own in life. So in the end, the choices we make in our lives are merely consequences of our upbringing and events and experiences in our lives, in a sense, we don’t have a choice when it comes to what we choose. Our decisions aren’t anyone’s fault and no one should be punished for all eternity for these decisions. If the Christian God was real don’t you think he would realize why different people make different choices (seeing how he is all-knowing and all)? But then of course Christians believe in “souls”. Souls, the nonphysical aspect of a person that gives consciousness, thought, feeling, and will. As an atheist I don’t believe in the soul concept, our consciousness is merely an illusion of our highly evolved brains. But lets say souls do exist, and they give us consciousness and determine our choices. So, if the soul concept is true then that means that our personality is already there and life experiences and our upbringing have little to do with choices we make in our life. Is that what you are saying, Christian? You are saying that it is our fault, our soul, that determine who we are and whether or not I chose to be an atheist, Christian, Jew, or Muslim? Our soul decides to be a mass murderer or a caring organ donor? If that’s the case, then what determines what our souls will choose? God? Does God not create the soul? If a Christian tells me I’m going to Hell because I can’t find a single logical reason as to why his religion makes any sense at all, he just shrugs me off as a lost soul who should be ignored. They say that God is testing us and that we must get past our doubts and accept Jesus as our lord blah, blah, blah. But what determines whether or not our soul will be able to over come and pass Gods test? God created the soul, so he must determine that, no? So is God pre-deciding who will go to Hell and who will go to Heaven? Apparently. A good example would be this: Lets say you were creating a computer game simulator based on our world. You give each person in the game their own AI (soul) that tells that person what choices to make in certain situations. You then start the game and tell all the AI controlled people to worship you by following a bunch of your random rules or else be deleted from the game. You put obstacles up that will attempt to persuade them to not follow you, some of the AI controlled people will be able to get around the obstacles and follow you because their AI was able to, but others will not, so they are deleted. It’s not the fault of the AI controlled people, it’s the creators fault. It just doesn’t make any sense. If you still believe that a god could exist that would be stupid enough to do something like this then at the very least, stop worshipping him, he doesn’t deserve it... Oh wait... You don't have a choice.March 13 Christian IgnoranceAfter being in another one of my atheist vs. theist debates for a couple months on an internet forum and after I made some really great points against the existence of God one of the fundamentalist Christians on the forum responds with this: "You have come here only with the intention of making your meaningless point; you don't care to learn or your responses would demonstrate some shred of conscious thought. You have changed nothing here; my faith in the sinfulness of man may have been reinforced by your words, but that's the extent of your influence. My Bible may mean nothing to you, but the words of the damned mean less than nothing to me. As long as you are damned your actions will only give me greater assurance of the truth of the Bible and the glory of God. You live by His grace and may be saved by His mercy; if not, you are doomed for all eternity. The ignorance of these people amazes and baffles me. March 09 First Blog EntryThis is my first blog entry for this website, or rather my first blog entry ever. I intend on using this blog as a medium to express myself, mainly to express my atheism and other thoughts I may have relating to atheism. I'll try to write as much as I can, I'm new to this whole blog thing though so don't expect too much yet. I'll use this entry to talk about myself, who I am, and what I believe. My name is Corey, I live in USA, Florida, I'm a 17 year old male, and I'm an atheist. I've been an atheist for probably about a year or two and was an agnostic for my entire life before that. I was introduced to atheism in an online forum at the age of 15 where I watched and sometimes took part in debates between atheists and theists or creationists and evolutionists. I am currently reading The God Delusion by Richard Dawkins, whom I have great respect and admiration for. I agree with people like Richard Dawkins and Sam Harris when it comes to religion. That's all I can think of for now, I'll try to make another blog entry soon. -Corey |
